Practical procedural insights for confident musculoskeletal care.

Procedural Orthopaedics for Physician Assistants: Sports Medicine is a comprehensive learning series designed to elevate the role of the physician assistant across the full spectrum of musculoskeletal care. This bundled experience includes essential topics on shoulder, knee, and elbow pathology, equipping physician assistants with the knowledge and procedural insight necessary to support high-quality orthopaedic care. Through expert-led instruction, procedural videos, and real-world case studies, physician assistants will build confidence in clinical and surgical environments while enhancing patient outcomes.

This series is designed for physician assistants and allied healthcare professionals who support orthopaedic surgeons in the evaluation and management of sports injuries. Covering acromioclavicular joint injuries, anterior cruciate ligament injuries, meniscal tears, partial-thickness rotator cuff tears, and lateral and medial epicondylitis, the program emphasizes accurate diagnosis, imaging study interpretation, and treatment planning in combination with procedural knowledge. Learners gain insight on surgical workflows, intraoperative responsibilities, and postoperative treatment strategies essential for effective team-based practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Differentiate common sports medicine pathology, including acromioclavicular joint injuries, anterior cruciate ligament injuries, meniscal tears, partial-thickness rotator cuff tears, and lateral and medial epicondylitis, via clinical evaluation findings, physical examination findings, and injury classification systems to guide treatment decisions.
  • Interpret imaging studies (radiographs, MRIs, and ultrasonographic images) to accurately assess injury patterns, injury severity, and associated pathology for surgical planning.
  • Apply indications and decision-making principles for nonsurgical versus surgical management across shoulder, knee, and elbow conditions.
  • Demonstrate effective operating room preparation and patient positioning to support open and arthroscopic sports medicine procedures.
  • Assist with key intraoperative techniques, including graft preparation, arthroscopic instrumentation, suture management, and critical anatomic structure protection, to promote surgical efficiency and safety.
  • Implement postoperative treatment and rehabilitation protocols while recognizing and addressing complications to optimize recovery and patient outcomes.
