Go beyond traditional learning with a 360° perspective on orthopedic topics.

Each ICL360 is a cutting-edge CME course designed to provide a holistic learning experience, featuring curated video content sourced from expert-selected Instructional Course Lectures enhanced with insightful commentary and comprehensive assessment questions. This all-encompassing course goes beyond traditional learning by offering a complete 360° perspective on orthopedic topics. Explore additional resources, including full-text readings from the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS), technique videos from Orthopaedic Video Theater (OVT), and links to external literature and PubMed. Elevate your clinical decision-making skills and gain a well-rounded understanding of essential orthopedic concepts with ICL360.

This Instructional Course Lecture provides a detailed and evidence-based review of orthobiologics for shoulder and sports injuries, with emphasis on platelet-rich plasma characterization, cell-based therapies, and biologic augmentation of rotator cuff repair.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the biologic rationale for the orthobiologic treatment of patients with shoulder and elbow disorders, including the interaction among cells, signaling molecules, scaffolds, mechanical load, tissue type, and healing.
  • Distinguish platelet-rich plasma, bone marrow aspirate concentrate, microfragmented adipose tissue, amniotic matrix, stromal vascular fraction, exosomes, and stem cells via accurate terminology and clinically relevant regulatory distinctions.
  • Interpret platelet-rich plasma studies, with attention to platelet dose, leukocyte content, capture rate, activation, injection location, reporting standards, and outcome measures.
  • Apply the evidence for platelet-rich plasma to shoulder and elbow conditions, including lateral epicondylitis, rotator cuff tendinopathy, rotator cuff tears, and adhesive capsulitis.
  • Evaluate the role of cell-based and marrow-derived augmentation in rotator cuff repair, including the distinction between structural healing, patient-reported outcomes, and treatment failure.
  • Select biologic augmentation strategies for rotator cuff repair based on tear size, tissue quality, revision status, patient risk factors, bone-tendon interface biology, and repair mechanics.
  • Compare marrow stimulation, biceps-based augmentation, bioinductive collagen implants, dermal allograft, and other scaffold strategies for high-risk rotator cuff tears.
  • Counsel patients on orthobiologic treatment via evidence-based language that avoids overpromising, recognizes product heterogeneity, and identifies areas in which clinical evidence remains limited.
