This AAOS CODOrthoXpress brings you video recordings of expert faculty discussing: Bones of Society: Unraveling the Social Fabric of Orthopedic Health Equity
Course Director: Lisa Cannada, MD, FAAOS
Course Description:
Diversity includes many characteristics that may be visible such as race, age and gender; it also includes less visible characteristics such as personality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, geography, work experience and family situation – all of which make us similar to and different from one another. It is these differences, grouped under Social Determinants of Health (SDoH), in our patients that warrant further focus. The United States population is racially, ethnically, and physically diverse. By 2030, 29% of the population is expected to be racial or ethnic minorities compared to 21% in 2013. Given the incredible diversity of our population, it is critical to examine the disparities which exist in orthopaedic trauma care for these vulnerable populations as the limited data is concerning. This symposium is aimed at defining social determinants of health in orthopedic trauma patients and exploring their implications for health equity. It metaphorically ties the structure and health of bones to the foundational aspects of society that affect health outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify key social determinants which exist in leading to orthopaedic trauma
- Discuss how to initiative difficult conversations about lack of resources for patients
- Plan how to optimize recovery after trauma for our patients with limited resources
