- Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to: - Understand the various options in managing end-stage ankle arthritis (arthrodesis, joint distraction, arthroplasty)
- Identify the role of total ankle arthroplasty in managing degenerative, systemic, or post-traumatic ankle arthritis
- Describe conservative management of ankle arthritis
- Review the indications for total ankle arthroplasty (vs. ankle arthrodesis)
- Differentiate among the surgical approaches for four FDA approved US total ankle arthroplasties
- Demonstrate cadaveric implantation of four FDA approved US total ankle arthroplasties
- Identify the need for supplementary procedures done commensurate with or in advance of total ankle arthroplasty
- Explain the timing of said procedures (one or two stage reconstructions)
- Identify post-operative management of four FDA approved U.S. total ankle arthroplasties
- Evaluate the complications (early and late) of total ankle arthroplasty
- Formulate and implement a strategy to manage said complications (fusion vs. revision).
