Description
Inter-prosthetic femur fractures—those occurring between hip and knee prostheses—are being encountered with increasing frequency as the population of joint replacement patients continues to grow. This session provides a comprehensive review of current surgical approaches to these complex fractures, emphasizing strategies for achieving stable fixation and promoting early mobilization. Faculty will discuss various fixation and reconstruction techniques, outlining the advantages, disadvantages, and contraindications of each method. The session will also explore common complications associated with inter-prosthetic fractures, including implant failure, nonunion, and infection, with practical guidance on prevention and management. Through case-based discussion, participants will gain insights into optimizing outcomes and reducing morbidity in this challenging patient population.
Learning Objectives
- Review general surgical techniques for managing inter-prosthetic femur fractures
- Discuss pros and cons to different techniques and identify contra-indications for these options
- Review possible complications and how to manage them when they occur
