AAOS Resident Education Webinar Series: Preparing the Next Generation: Robotics, AI, and the Future of Arthroplasty Training

AAOS Resident Education Webinar Series: Preparing the Next Generation: Robotics, AI, and the Future of Arthroplasty Training

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 7:15 PM - 8:15 PM Central Standard Time

Online

This webinar is an AAOS member benefit: Members attend for free!

Description

Robotics, navigation, artificial intelligence, and digital planning are rapidly changing arthroplasty—but how should orthopaedic training evolve with them?
This session explores what residents need to learn today to prepare for a surgical environment that will continue to change throughout their careers. Participants will consider how programs can introduce robotics and AI without creating technology dependence, preserve foundational surgical judgment, address disparities in access to advanced platforms, and determine which competencies should be expected of every graduating resident.
The discussion will also examine the implications for faculty development, fellowship training, and residency curriculum design as emerging technologies become increasingly integrated into clinical practice. Attendees will leave with practical considerations for preparing trainees not simply to use today's technology, but to critically evaluate and adapt to the technologies they will encounter throughout their careers.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify emerging applications of robotics, navigation, digital planning, and artificial intelligence that are influencing arthroplasty practice and training.
  • Evaluate approaches for integrating technology-assisted techniques into resident education while maintaining proficiency in foundational surgical principles and conventional techniques.
  • Examine strategies for providing meaningful technology exposure to residents across programs with varying access to robotic and navigation platforms.
  • Assess the educational benefits, limitations, and ethical considerations associated with AI-assisted learning and surgical planning.
  • Define core competencies residents may need to enter practice prepared for continued advances in robotics, artificial intelligence, and digitally enabled orthopaedic care.

AAOS Digital Health Webinar - Digital MSK Therapy: Threat or Opportunity for Orthopaedic Surgeons?

AAOS Digital Health Webinar - Digital MSK Therapy: Threat or Opportunity for Orthopaedic Surgeons?

Wednesday, October 28, 2026 7:15 PM - 8:15 PM Central Standard Time

Online

This webinar is an AAOS member benefit: Members attend for free!

Description

Digital musculoskeletal therapy companies now sit between millions of patients and orthopaedic care, sold directly to employers and health plans as a lower-cost alternative to in-person treatment. This final webinar in the AAOS Digital Health series maps the commercial landscape: who the major players are, what they actually deliver, how they are paid, and what the independent evidence does and does not show. Eric Swart and Ray Hwang examine how these programs reshape referral patterns and what surgeons are already seeing in their own practices. The session closes on the practical question of whether digital MSK is a threat to orthopaedic practice, a partnership opportunity, or both, and what surgeons and the Academy should do next.

Learning Obejctives

1. Describe the major categories of commercial digital MSK programs, including how they are structured, who purchases them, and how they generate revenue.
2. Evaluate the current evidence base for digital MSK therapy outcomes, including independent assessments, and distinguish where that evidence is strong from where it is thin.
3. Anticipate the effect of digital MSK programs on orthopaedic referral patterns and identify practical options for surgeons and practices to compete, partner, or engage.
